News in brief
Teacher convicted of molestation

By Itim
The Jerusalem Post - April 5, 2000

The Tel Aviv District Court yesterday convicted Yisrael Abadi, 46, of Holon, of sexually molesting three children, aged eight to 10, in the synagogue where he teaches.

The three-judge panel presented a split decision, with Judges Nathan Amit and Abraham Tal ruling that the children's testimony was credible, and Judge Edna Kaplan finding that Abadi should be acquitted due to reasonable doubt.

Tal wrote that inconsistencies in the children's testimony were due to the trauma they had experienced and their fear of testifying against Abadi.

The children told police that their teacher would force them into the synagogue's bomb shelter, tie them up and gag them, and then sodomize them. Abadi is to be sentenced at a later date.
