Police arrest three teenagers for alleged abuse of Bat Yam student

Police have arrested three youths, aged 13-14, for the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old schoolmate.

Ayalon region police began investigating the case after friends convinced the Bat Yam teen to talk to a school counselor about the alleged abuse, which had been going on for around three months.

The three students, two of whom are in the same class as the complainant while the third is a grade above, were arrested and confessed to the allegations. They have been released to house arrest and indictments are expected.

The school principal learned of the case in two ways. A few days ago, teachers at the Bat Yam school noticed an 8th grade student being beaten in the schoolyard. When called for a talk with the principal, the student said he was beaten because he "did bad things," and said he was attacked by the friends of a classmate.

Simultaneously, the complainant and his friends approached the school counselor, saying they wished to tell her what was happening to the boy. The complainant was initially embarrassed but eventually agreed to detail in writing the abuse to which he had been subjected by his schoolmates.

"Once it became clear to the school that this was a case of serious sexual abuse, a municipal counselor reported the incidents to us," head of the Ayalon region police's youth division, Superintendent Irit Amar, told Haaretz.

According to the complainant, the abuse began in October 2003.

"The story began because of a debt of NIS 20 apparently owed by the youth," Amar explained. Two of the suspects asked the youth to accompany them after studies to a nearby public park where they forced him to lower his pants in order "to prove that you are a man," they told him.

"He was embarrassed, but they forcefully pulled down his pants. In a written testimony he told how a woman passing by at the time yelled at the suspects that they should be ashamed of their actions, thus putting an end to that particular incident," Amar said.

But that was just the beginning. The suspects allegedly met the youth repeatedly afterward for hours at a time and unmercifully abused him.

In one of the initial meetings in the house of one of the suspects, they allegedly stripped the boy and drew smiley faces and swastikas on his body and sexual organs with a permanent marker.

The youth repeatedly asked the suspects to stop their acts but this was met with punches.
The boy was also allegedly made to stand on his hands and knees, with the suspects riding on him and kicking him. "They occasionally blindfolded him, forced the youth to touch their sexual organs and attempted to force him to perform oral sex on them," Amar said.

The suspects documented their actions with a digital camera and saved the images on their computer.

The youth told investigators how his mother once called one of the suspects when she was looking for him. The suspect told the youth's mother he did not know where he was.

"He returned home humiliated and in tears," the youth's mother later told police, but he refused to tell his mother what happened.

After the alleged abuse came to light, the mother of one of the suspects called for a meeting of all the involved parties. She became furious when she learned that the complainant had turned to the school's principal and called him "stupid." The mother claimed that the affair was a case of nothing more than a childhood mischief.

The suspects explained during questioning that they imitated acts they saw in pornographic movies they watched while abusing the youth.

The three suspects are due to appear in Rishon Letzion's juvenile court this morning for a remand hearing.
