Case of daily rape over 6 months shocks Rehovot police
By Roni Singer, Haaretz Correspondent
Haaretz - Feb. 26, 2004

A severe case of rape, violence and extortion was revealed Wednesday by the Rehovot police following a complaint filed by a 17-year-old resident of the city against two of her peers.

The complaint to the police was filed after the girl's mother noticed bruises on her daughter' body. The girl initially refused to tell her mother how the injuries had been caused, but was eventually persuaded to make a report to the police.

During questioning by investigators from the Rehovot police's juvenile division, the girl broke down and related how a youth with whom she was familiar habitually beat her. Later, she added that not only had the youth beaten her for the past year, he had also taken her pocket money, and had raped her on an almost daily basis for the past six months.

A few months ago, the girl was hospitalized with injuries sustained from one of the beatings.

"Even after that incident, as previously, the young girl continued to hide what she was going through, and didn't divulge a thing to her parents or her friends," the commander of the Rehovot police station, Chief Superintendent Chen Suria, said Thursday.

According to Suria, the situation deteriorated last summer, when the youth began to demand sex from the girl, using threats and beatings to coerce her into letting him have his way with her on a routine basis. The youth would meet her in public parks and rape her almost every day, Suria said, noting that due to her intense fear, the girl had consistently agreed to the youth's demands to meet him.

The girl told police that over the past few weeks, the suspect had brought along a friend, 14.5, who had also raped her. The severe beatings, the girl reported, had continued during all the acts of rape.

The initial suspect was arrested Wednesday; he was remanded in custody for five days on Thursday by the Rishon Letzion Magistrate's Court. The youth has admitted to beating the girl "here and there," and confessed to taking her pocket money on one occasion. He claims, however, that the sex was consensual.

The second youth was picked up by police on Thursday; he denies all the girl's accusations.

"This girl suffered for a long time without finding a single shoulder on which to lean," Suria said Thursday. "This is a serious and shocking case, and it is terrible therefore that she didn't approach the police. There are those who listen to and treat such incidents with the full weight of the law; therefore it is important to know that such incidents can be prevented from the moment they begin by simply turning to the police.

The police and State Prosecutor's Office are preparing indictments against the two youths.
