Two men from the West Bank village of Yata have been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a teenage girl and enticing her to use drugs.

Police began working on the case after the parents of a 15-year-old girl from Ramle reported that she had gone missing twice last month. After a search, the police said the girl was found in a "dazed and frightened" state wandering around the city's streets.

Youth squad investigators started questioning her, and eventually she admitted to having met a young man from Yata who gave her drugs, police said. The girl told police she had never used drugs before, but that she was now addicted to marijuana and ecstasy.

Upon further investigation, the girl revealed that the young man had sexually abused her and handed her over to other men. A police source said the suspect had apparently run up heavy debts and used the teenager as a pawn, handing her over to men to whom he owed money.

The girl reported that she had developed a dependency on the man and the drugs. She stopped going to school, a situation that no one even questioned, the source said.

The youth squad is now looking for a suitable rehabilitation framework for the girl.

The two suspects were caught by chance. Police chased a stolen vehicle where the two, both in their 20s, were found sitting inside. They were brought to court in Ramle yesterday and remanded into custody. Further arrests are expected.
